General dentistry includes a comprehensive exam from our caring dentists in Baton Rouge
Exams
Regular multi-point comprehensive exams are designed to safeguard the health of your family. Our caring dentists provide a wonderful patient experience to make your check-ups both enjoyable and worthwhile.

During a typical exam, we perform:

  • A bite evaluation
  • Periodontal screening
  • Smile analysis
  • Full-mouth charting
  • Dental assessment (mouth, teeth, neck, and face)
  • Digital x-rays (as needed)

We adapt each exam to meet your individual needs and use digital photography with intra and extraoral cameras to involve you in the diagnostic process. After your exam, Dr. Kidder spends some time reviewing the results and discusses your options. We may also recommend a dental cleaning and take before and after photos to monitor your progress.

Hygiene Visits
Along with exams every six months, our Baton Rouge dentists may recommend regular hygiene appointments. These routine cleanings help prevent gum disease, improve oral health, and instill good oral hygiene habits. Even if you if brush and floss every day, you can still benefit as these professional cleanings remove any plaque from those harder to reach areas.

Our experienced dental hygienists use state-of-the-art technology such as Cavitron and sonic scalers to gently remove the buildup of tartar and plaque. They will also use this time to provide kind feedback on your oral hygiene and provide advice when needed.

In addition, our younger patients or high-risk adult patients enjoy a fluoride treatment during their visit. This fluoride application helps boost your tooth’s enamel (or surface) and protect your teeth from tooth decay.

Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer is a real risk for all patients, which is why we offer annual screenings. Our goal is to catch any abnormalities early to give you a better treatment outcome.

Our team carefully examines your mouth, neck, and face for any signs of cancerous tissue. This may include white or red patches, lumps, or lesions.

If anything is discovered, our experienced dentists will provide a host of treatment options for you. We’ll also give you our professional recommendations and explain how we can help you during each stage of treatment.

Periodontal Care
Did you know that periodontal disease (gum disease) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults? This disease takes hold of gums due to poor oral hygiene but can be combated with regular treatment.

The early signs of gum disease include inflammation, sensitivity, and/or bleeding gums. If left untreated, these can lead to more serious problems such as bone loss, gum recession, and tooth loss.

At Kidder Dental, we offer in-house periodontal care in the form of maintenance programs and professional cleanings. During your regular check-ups, Drs. Dustin and Elizabeth Kidder examine your gums and provide preventive advice.

If your periodontal disease has progressed, we may recommend Arestin medication or root planing and scaling to control or remove the infection.

Sealants
Occasionally, food debris or bacteria can build up in the grooves and pits of the surface of your teeth. This issue occurs due to these areas not being reachable by a toothbrush and is more common in younger patients. To help prevent this dental problem, our dentists in Baton Rouge offer sealants.

Sealants are a thin coating painted onto the surface of each affected tooth. It only takes 5-10 minutes to apply to the tooth but the effects are long-lasting! The coating covers over the grooves in your tooth and is hardened using a special light. Your tooth surface will feel smooth with no way for debris to become trapped, thus allowing you brush away any decay.

This procedure is non-invasive and painless. The sealants can be cared for by brushing and flossing and are evaluated during each dental check-up.

Appliances
Grinding or clenching of the teeth can lead to more complex issues such as worn or cracked teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and fatigue. At Kidder Dental, we are proud to offer night guards for patients who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMJ disorders.

Nightguards protect your teeth from clenching and grinding and can help alleviate TMJ issues, such as facial muscle pain and headaches.

In addition to these corrective mouth guards, we help prevent dental trauma with sports mouth guards. These athletic guards are designed to comfortably fit in your mouth and protect your teeth from impact during sporting activities.

TMJ
Your tempromandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. Many people suffer from jaw pain, headaches, and jaw clicking due to TMJ disorders. These can be caused by:

  • Teeth grinding/clenching
  • Misaligned teeth or bite
  • Stress
  • Head or neck trauma
  • Aging

If left untreated, TMJ disorders can have a detrimental affect on your life. At Kidder Dental, we use modern technology to help diagnose TMJ disorders and provide some non-surgical treatment options. These include splint therapy and behavioral guidance. Dr. Dustin Kidder has advanced training in caring for those suffering from TMJ. He can help analyze your bite and give you advice on the best course of treatment.

Our Options

We offer two safe and comfortable sedation solutions at Kidder Dental – oral sedation and nitrous oxide. Here is what you need to know about each treatment:

Oral Sedation: This safe prescription sedative is administered through the mouth one hour before treatment. Patients report feeling calm as if they are taking a short nap and often don’t remember the treatment itself.

Nitrous Oxide: Also known as “laughing gas” this sedative is breathed in and creates a feeling of deep relaxation. After the treatment, it only takes a few minutes to reverse these effects.
